A Massage to Suit You?

Therapeutic Massage

Vicky Gaughan

My approach to massage comes from years of practice and study of the powerful effects of many touch therapies. Massage cannot fail to affect us on all levels of our existence.

People choose massage for all sorts of reasons. An aching body may need regular pummelling and stretching to help restore flexibility and ease, an aching heart may need a space of stillness and healing. Individuals feeling fatigued and at odds with the world will find massage re-energising and re-balancing, and folk feeling disconnected of mind body and spirit will reach a deeper sense of peace and well being. Gently touched in the place that needs touch, touched deeply in the place that needs depth, held in this safe place, depending on what you require.

This time is yours, it can be a weekly time, fortnightly, monthly or less frequently, and we will negotiate how the massage time is spent . It works best if you book a regular session in advance as my diary is often full. On your first appointment you will be asked to fill in a health questionnaire which will enable me to give the most appropriate massage for you. The information is kept completely confidential.

Vicky is the Principal of the Sheffield Centre for Massage Training (SCMT) which is based at Stillpoint

Tracey Parr, Carol Spence  & Rochelle Clark also offer Therapeutic Massage at Stillpoint having trained with the SCMT

Raewyn Morrison

Massage is one of the most effective ways of relaxing, toning muscles and relieving stress and tension. Stress can affect us in many different ways, building up over a long period of time to produce a variety of symptoms such as insomnia, backache, headaches, neck & shoulder problems, anxiety & depression, to name but a few.

In physical terms, massage stimulates the circulation of blood and lymph, soothes and calms the nervous system, relieves tired and tense muscles, and helps the elimination of toxins. Touch is one of the first senses to develop, which may be why massage also helps us to feel nurtured and good about ourselves, whilst becoming more conscious of and connected with our body.

I work with a holistic approach guiding the massage to the individual’s particular needs. Massage is more than skin deep, deeper than muscles and bones, a good massage penetrates right to the depth of your being.

Hot Stones Massage

Carol Spence & Tracey Parr

This is a speciality massage using smooth, heated volcanic basalt stones. It is not only deeply soothing and relaxing but also, added to the benefits of therapeutic massage, the heat of the stones can increase the release of tight muscles, speed the removal of toxins and help localised circulation.

Traditional massage strokes are used while holding the heated stone which works deeply into the muscles. As the stone cools it is replaced with another. The different sizes of stones fit into the areas and contours of the body. Heated stones may also be left on different parts of the body such as the back and abdomen. Small stones can be used in between toes or placed in the hands to increase the flow of energy during the massage – a truly wonderful warming experience!

The massage alternates between the use of stones and the hands and will always be adapted to your unique needs. Different techniques are used such as deep relaxing breathing, passive movements and stretches for joint mobilisation and suppleness.

Pregnancy Massage

Rochelle Clark

Rochelle is a qualified midwife and Therapeutic Massage practitioner. She specialises in massage during pregnancy and in the postnatal period, integrating traditional massage with Shiatsu techniques.

Sessions may also include breathing, visualisation and relaxation techniques, and exercises for strengthening abdominal, pelvic floor and postural muscles. The massage encourages bonding & communication with your growing baby, and there is also the opportunity for the birth partner to learn massage skills for labour.

Rochelle’s treatment can relieve aches and tensions, prepare your body for labour and birth, and promote postnatal recovery.
Regular massage treatments throughout pregnancy can significantly improve the likelihood of having a normal labour and birth close to term. (Though of course there is nothing like babies for unpredictability!)

This massage can also be a nurturing, healing support for women who are experiencing post-natal depression. It offers women a space without judgement in which to rest the mind and be gently supported in re-connecting with themselves.

Carolyn Lindsay

Carolyn is a physiotherapist specialising in women’s health. She offers Pregnancy Massage & Therapeutic Massage.
Whilst massage is one of the key physiotherapy skills, in our time constrained NHS it can rarely be used to its full potential and is often undervalued. As well as specific treatment such as working on joint or muscle problems, pelvic floor symptoms, stretching scar tissue & reducing swelling, it also promotes wider psychological & physical benefits.

Through its influence on the nervous system it can decrease muscle tension and spasm providing relaxation and stress reduction. For women juggling busy lives massage also offers important ‘me time’ and a chance to focus inwards and let go.

It is safe to receive massage at any stage of pregnancy. It can provide a one-off pampering opportunity, or regular sessions can help the body to cope with the many changes and adaptations that pregnancy brings. In the postnatal period it can support the body in returning to balance and shape.
Acupressure techniques enable a woman or her birth partner to learn a drug-free aid for pain relief during labour, which studies have shown to be effective.
