Physiotherapy & Massage
Specialist in Pelvic Health for Men & Women
For Carolyn’s fees, see below
I qualified in physiotherapy in 2001 and, after varied experience, have been specialising in the area of Pelvic Health since 2005. I am committed to this vital and often overlooked area, having a particular interest in those suffering from pelvic floor problems and pelvic pain. I continue to work in this field within the NHS alongside my private practice.
I have undertaken extensive postgraduate training in assessing and treating pelvic pain and for assessing and treating pelvic floor dysfunction in both men and women. I am currently working towards my MSc in Rehabilitation Studies, specialising in pelvic floor dysfunction.
I use a combination of manual therapy, massage, advice, acupuncture, postural correction and exercises to restore function and reduce pain, aiming to offer the most appropriate holistic treatment for each individual.
Fitness for your Pelvic floor
Do you know where you pelvic floor muscles are?
If you don’t you are not alone! Over 66 % of people do not know exactly where their pelvic floor muscles are and over 40% have never exercised these vital muscles. Whatever your age or gender, everyone needs strong, flexible pelvic floor muscles.
If your pelvic floor muscles are fit they:
- support your internal organs
- prevent leakage from your bladder or bowel
- improve sexual function & satisfaction for both men & women
- help your body cope with pregnancy & childbirth
- improve your posture & waistline

All assessment & treatment is completely confidential
A leaflet is also available giving further details of pelvic floor symptoms, causes & treatment.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy uses manual techniques, postural correction, advice and exercise to restore movement, function and well-being. Carolyn has experience in effectively treating a wide range of conditions including:
- Back and neck pain
- Sciatica
- Pelvic girdle pain
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Hip pain
- Postural & movement problems
Physiotherapy in pregnancy
Manual techniques can help restore symmetry & normal movement to your joints. Additionally postural correction and advice on fitness and exercise can help you to maintain normal activities during pregnancy and return to them after the birth.
Antenatal advice includes positioning and breathing for labour, whilst postnatal treatment can help stretched or separated abdominal muscles, pelvic floor rehabilitation or recovery from a caesarean section.
I have particular experience in treating back or hip pain, sciatica & pelvic girdle pain (formerly known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction or SPD)
Acupuncture
I combine my health care training with my additional acupuncture training to assess and treat conditions that are suitable for acupuncture. Acupuncture has its origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine and western research trials are also increasingly proving its effectiveness. It is recommended as a treatment by:
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE)
The European Guidelines for the treatment of Pelvic Girdle Pain
The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women’s Health
Within women’s health it is commonly used to treat:
- Low back pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Pelvic Girdle Pain (formerly SPD) in pregnancy
- Hormonal imbalance (such as Polycystic ovaries & hormonal headaches)
- Fatigue & sleep disorders
- Anxiety
- Nausea & vomiting (including morning sickness)
- Labour preparation & induction
Treatment involves the insertion of very fine, single-patient-use needles to stimulate the nervous system, via the nerves in muscles and skin. This brings about the release of natural painkilling and healing chemicals in the spinal cord and brain. Research has shown that acupuncture influences the nervous system, hormonal system, respiratory, reproductive and urinary systems. There is no evidence of any harmful effects from acupuncture to the mother or unborn child.
At the initial assessment I will take a full history of your problem. Acupuncture will either be integrated into your overall treatment plan or offered as a stand alone treatment. Acupuncture treatment is cumulative so initially appointments may be weekly or twice-weekly but the intervals will then usually lengthen.
Massage
(Gift Vouchers for Massage are available)
Massage is one of the key physiotherapy skills. However, in our time constrained NHS, it can rarely be used to its full potential and is often undervalued. As well as specific treatment such as working on joint or muscle problems, pelvic floor symptoms, stretching scar tissue & reducing swelling, it also promotes wider psychological & physical benefits.
Through its influence on the nervous system it can decrease muscle tension and spasm providing relaxation and stress reduction. For women juggling busy lives massage also offers important ‘me time’ and a chance to focus inwards and let go.
It is safe to receive massage at any stage of pregnancy. It can provide a one-off pampering opportunity, or regular sessions can help the body to cope with the many changes and adaptations that pregnancy brings. In the postnatal period it can support the body in returning to balance and shape.
Acupressure techniques enable a woman or her birth partner to learn a drug-free aid for pain relief during labour, which studies have shown to be effective.
What is involved in treatment?
At the initial assessment I will take a full case history as well as information about the specific problems you are seeking help with.
I will then make and agree a treatment plan with you, deciding which treatment or combination of approaches is most appropriate to help you work towards your goals.
