Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
For Gerry’s fees, see below
My background is in business and I continue to work as a management consultant, trainer and executive coach in addition to running my hypnotherapy practice. My road to becoming a hypnotherapist stretches back to the early 1980s when hypnotherapy helped me to deal better with a very stressful time in my life. For me the most valuable outcome was that I learned self hypnosis as part of the process. I have used self hypnosis since to help manage myself well through the course of my personal and professional life. My interest in self hypnosis and my work as a change management consultant led me to become an NLP Practitioner and later to train as a Hypnotherapist.
What links all of my experience is that I enjoy helping people to change effectively and quickly, and to do so in way that is both right for them and enduring. I especially enjoy helping people to learn new tools to overcome issues that are limiting their lives including, if they wish, providing training in self hypnosis so that they can help themselves in future.
What is Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?
First of all it is certainly not at as it is portrayed in spooky movies! Hypnosis is simply a process for inducing a trance, which is a very relaxed daydream-like state. A trance or hypnotic state is also something we all experience daily. For example, while driving you may have experienced the feeling of arriving somewhere and not remember the journey at all. Or perhaps you have been so engrossed in something such as reading a book or doing a task, that you notice nothing else, including time going by. These are everyday examples of being in a trance when your conscious mind is engaged elsewhere, enabling your subconscious mind to take over for a while.
While in a trance you will feel relaxed and may be unaware of your surroundings. In this relaxed state great changes are possible as your subconscious mind is more able to accept suggestions & new ideas. Fears, phobias and habits exist in the subconscious and hypnotherapy can help the subconscious mind overcome them. Hypnosis is such a natural state, like a daydream, that most clients feel relaxed and refreshed after each session.
Hypnotherapy is a very powerful, practical way to get results with a wide range of issues- in fact anything with a psychological or emotional or behavioural element, such as:
stress ~ phobias & fears ~ confidence ~ weight issues ~ bad habits ~ negative thinking ~ improving academic, sport & business performance ~ pain control ~ anxiety ~ relationships ~ panic attacks ~ sleep problems
I also find it very satisfying to help children with problems such as bedwetting, shyness, nightmares & anxiety. Children are readily hypnotised, their active imaginations blending easily with the hypnotic state of mind. All treatments with children are only carried out in the presence of their parents or legal guardians who have given their written consent.
What is NLP?
Neuro Linguistic Programming was devised in the late 60’s and early 70’s by Richard Bandler & John Grinder, who studied the work of supremely effective therapists and the factors accounting for their success. They extended their research to successful people in other walks of life such as in sales, politics, design, art, technology, community work & business management.
The discoveries that they made about how language, thought patterns and perceptionsof the world are mutually inter dependent and affect behaviour, produced the valuable array of techniques known as NLP. It can be used to help you to:
- think more clearly and creatively
- understand and influence others
- overcome fears and phobias
- change limiting beliefs
- feel more confident and positive
- achieve more of your true potential
Hypnotherapy and NLP sessions
Hypnotherapy and NLP are rapid techniques and generally clients need from 2 to 4 sessions, occasionally more, depending on individual needs. On your first visit we will discuss what you want to gain from your sessions. I will explain hypnotherapy more fully and answer any questions you may have. We will then do some relaxing hypnosis with positive suggestions to help you begin the process of change.
In the second meeting I will have tailored the session more specifically to your personal needs. We will then revise and discuss future sessions as needed.
What is Life Coaching?
Life Coaching is focused on clarifying, motivating, mobilising and supporting you in taking control of your life and creating the life you want. You may sense that you want more than life is currently giving you, or perhaps have concerns in some of the following areas:
- work, and work-life balance
Together we will work out where you want to be, when you want to get there and how you are going to get there. In doing so I will challenge your thinking and help you to confront things about yourself that you may not like to hear, but need to tackle. As such, life coaching is not a soft touch and not to be entered into lightly. However, even though you may find it tough at times, we will regularly review your progress and deal with whatever needs to be addressed in order for you to achieve your goals.

Note: My longer session time of 90 minutes, compared to the standard 1 hour session, means that clients get better results faster and need fewer sessions.
