Prior to qualifying in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy I worked as a mental health nurse within both hospital and community settings in Sheffield, which gave me experience of working with a wide range of mental health problems along with an understanding of the range of related services available in the city.
I was drawn to train in this form of psychotherapy because of the strong evidence that it is helpful for people with anxiety and mood related problems. I enjoy engaging with both individuals and groups, seeing people achieving their targets and ultimately getting on with a valued life. I continue to work within the NHS in the Specialist Psychotherapy Service, I offer supervision to individuals and groups and also enjoy teaching on the post graduate diploma course in CBP, affiliated to Sheffield Hallam University.
What is CBT?
As a way of dealing with emotional problems, CBT focuses on how the thoughts, images, beliefs & attitudes that we hold (our cognitive processes) can create our feelings and mood, and how this relates to the way we behave.
Whilst its main focus is on what is going on in the present rather than the past, often the therapy will also look at how our thinking patterns may have begun in early childhood, and the impact these patterns of thinking may have on how we interpret the world as adults.
The client and therapist work together to understand what the problems are and to develop a new strategy for tackling them.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR has helped an estimated two million people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.
