I first discovered the Alexander Technique in the 1990’s, having suffered chronic back pain for many years. After unsuccessfully trying many forms of treatment the Technique was a revelation to me. I discovered that it was my movement habits and harmful patterns of tension that were causing my back problems. I learned how to look after myself through Alexander lessons.
I was so impressed with the Technique that I left my career in Education and moved from Nottingham to undertake the three year training course. I have since discovered all the other wonderful benefits of the Technique, it is so stimulating and life changing, I believe it has allowed me to become my true self.
About the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is an increasingly popular complementary therapy that is now widely accepted by the medical profession. It works well with other complementary therapies.
It is a method that people of all ages and abilities can learn to help relieve the pain and stress caused by the effect modern life can have on our body.
Stress and tension may lead to back pain, headaches, stiff necks and other common ailments. All too often we accept them as part of the wear and tear of life, but the Alexander Technique teaches us that we have a choice, and through a gradual process of re-education you will gain more control of your well-being.
The Technique will allow you to function more efficiently. Movement will require less effort and breathing becomes easier. Your health, vitality & awareness will re-establish naturally.
The Alexander Technique can also be a powerful tool for self-development.
How postural habits develop
Observing small children, you’ll notice how effortlessly they sit, stand and move around. This is not always evident in adults as we are so often out of alignment! We drive in cars, sit in poorly designed chairs and an accumulation of harmful movement habits may have led to discomfort or chronic pain. We often view this as the unavoidable result of our modern lifestyle, but our habits are not as unchangeable as you may have believed. The Alexander Technique offers an effective method of ‘unlearning’ them.
Within a lesson you learn to recognise and release inappropriate tensions, giving you more energy for all your activities. The Alexander Technique provides a way to feel better, and move in a more relaxed and comfortable way….the way nature intended.
What are the benefits of the Alexander Technique?
When applied, the Technique can help you naturally overcome:
- Muscle tension and stiffness
- Back, neck and joint pain
- Poor posture
- Breathing and vocal problems
- Stress-related conditions
People also use the Technique to:
- Improve performance and prevent injury in music, drama and sport
- Enhance business and presentation skills
- Develop ease and poise in movement
- Support pregnancy and childbirth
What you learn in a lesson can be applied to any activity, from sitting at a computer with less tension, to exercising or gardening without strain, or to responding more calmly to your work environment and other stressful situations.
The Technique is of enormous benefit to everyone, even those who feel perfectly fit and completely free from aches and pains. However, many people come because of pain, sometimes having exhausted every other avenue.
About the lesson
I teach the Technique in a series of individual lessons. By using my hands very gently (not manipulation) on your head, neck, back and limbs I enable you to recognise and release any unnecessary tension and to redirect your energy. The principles of the Technique will be explained and how they can be applied to your daily activities.
The difference between the Alexander Technique and some more treatment orientated therapies, is that you are an active participant. This is why sessions are called ‘lessons’ and you are a ‘pupil’.
My aim is not just to help you alleviate your current problem but to teach you the skill to prevent a further recurrence.
