Physiotherapy
For Lesley’s fees, see below
Having been a British Wheel of Yoga teacher since 1981, I trained as a physiotherapist at Sheffield Hallam University, qualifying in 1992 and later completed a post graduate training in acupuncture for pain relief. I set up my private practice when my yoga students started lining up after classes to ask me if there was anything I could do to help with various troublesome bodyparts!
I suspect the reason why I enjoy my work as a physiotherapist is because I love teaching and still believe, after all these years, that information is power. By teaching patients how to take care of their backs, for example, I feel that I am empowering them to take charge and exert control over problems which often feel overwhelming.
Musculoskeletal physiotherapy offers many different techniques to promote the healing response and, as no two patients are alike, there are many ways to help. I particularly enjoy the rehabilitative aspect, using graded exercises and core stability work. If I can roll in some yoga techniques too, so much the better! A lot of my patients come from my yoga classes, followed by their families and friends, as they realise that they may not have to put up with their aches and pains.
The common complaints that I treat are:
Back and neck pain, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, sciatica, arm pain, headaches, tennis elbows and so on. I also treat sports injuries, such as knee and ankle ligament sprains, and chronic muscle imbalances that result in pain, for example poor shoulder blade stability, and poor abdominal support for the back.
I generally use a combination of manual therapy, rehabilitative exercises which may be yoga based, core stability work to support the spine/joints, and often acupuncture to promote healing and reduce pain. I always write exercises down for patients as this greatly increases compliance!
Wherever possible, I will give a diagnosis and explain the nature of the problem and why it has occurred. Many of us are struggling to stay fit but, confronted with a 21st century lifestyle that requires us to sit for long periods, including driving, using computers and then collapsing exhausted into comfy sofas…. keeping pain free can present quite a challenge. Simple advice about sitting posture, including back and neck support gadgets, can go a long way to giving relief to our chair-shaped bodies!
