After qualifying as Chartered Physiotherapist in 1982, I worked in various London Hospitals, until I moved to Sheffield in 1989. Working as a Community Physiotherapist I fell in love with the people here, and by visiting them in their own homes and running clinics in the local GP surgeries, I was privileged to get to know my patients on a deeper level. I have always believed in treating the whole person, not a condition or a disease, and adapting my work to the patient’s individual needs.
I started working in private practice in1997 leaving the NHS in 1999. In both my private practice and my work at the Cavendish Centre for Cancer Care, I combine both Healing and Physiotherapy as appropriate to best meet the needs of each individual.
Physiotherapy
The prime purpose of Physiotherapy is to restore function, activity and independence. We also aim to prevent injury or illness, and provide advice, information and treatment, individually tailored to the patient’s needs.
Your therapy will include ‘hands-on’ treatment, advice on how you can help yourself and, where appropriate, exercises that you can do between treatment sessions.
Following a detailed assessment and examination of your condition, where possible I will diagnose the problem and help you to understand what’s wrong, working with you to develop an effective treatment plan that takes into account your lifestyle, leisure activities and general health. This will be reviewed throughout the treatment sessions, depending on the changes that occur.
The professional body representing physiotherapists, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, circulates research-based guidelines to ensure that all its members throughout the country apply equally high standards in their work.
Specialist Treatment for Headaches & Migraine
I have completed advanced training in the use of de-sensitising trigger points in the upper neck which link with the cause of the migraine and headache. A course of this treatment is normally required and can significantly decrease the frequency and severity of these debilitating symptoms. More information…
Treatment of Scar Tissue following Surgery
Sometimes following surgery such as mastectomy or reconstructive surgery, spinal surgery or total hip replacement, there can be pain and restriction of movement affecting simple activities of daily life. By using specialised soft tissue techniques I can improve flexibility and decrease pain, therefore improving your quality of life. You don’t have to put up with chronic pain and restricted movement. If you have any questions concerning either of these specialist approaches and would like to speak to me before making an appointment, do please ring the Practice, 0114 258b 6133, and I will call you back.
Healing
Healing is the flow of healing energy through the healer to the patient. Like Acupuncture, Shiatsu and Yoga, healing works with the body’s energy. It re-energises and relaxes the patient to enable their own natural resources to deal with illness or injury.
Patients receiving healing usually experience a sense of calm, possibly heat or coolness, tingling or pain coming up to the surface and dispersing, indicating that the healing energies are working. Some people do not feel anything, but this does not mean that healing is not taking place.
Healing can be given for any illness, stress or injury and is completely natural, has no side effects and is complementary to any other therapy. Healing often helps with the speed and extent of recovery from serious illness, major surgery and from the effects of treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In my experience healing is effective on a variety of conditions as diverse as chronic sinusitis, diverticulitis and irritable bowel syndrome, fibroids, poly cystic ovaries, and many soft tissue problems such as tennis elbow and repetitive strain injuries.
Aside from its value in relieving pain and restoring function, healing is also notable for initiating improvements in patients’ attitudes, clarity of thought and their quality of life.
My practice
As my skills and my practice have evolved over several years to integrate healing with physiotherapy, I have found that the combination of both has proved to be very effective in the treatment of soft tissue problems and helping chronic pain. Healing is especially beneficial when combined with physiotherapy soft tissue techniques and mobilisation or manipulation of affected joints.
By sensing areas of abnormality in the tissues, I have learned to transmit healing through my fingertips to specific structures, releasing spasm and encouraging repair. I have, therefore, been successful in building a reputation for the treatment of chronic conditions such as following whiplash injury, chronic nerve pain, low back pain, fibromyalgia and chronic headaches, as well as the normal client base of a physiotherapist.
