Acupuncture

For Simon’s fees, see below

My interest in acupuncture was sparked by a nine month travel to the far East in 1994. On my return I trained at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine and qualified in 1997. This course, as the name suggests, involves both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Five-Element acupuncture, two theories that combine very effectively together. From 1997-1999 I have worked at clinics in London and from 1999-2005 in Sheffield and Lincolnshire.

Acupuncture and its benefits

Acupuncture uses the insertion of very fine needles to rebalance the body back to its original state of health. In Chinese Medicine the practitioner always looks for the ‘pattern of disharmony’ in the patient. This disharmony is a consequence of the body’s Yin and Yang becoming imbalanced through factors such as overwork, diet and emotional stress. Acupuncture treatment aims not to suppress symptoms, which are simply the body’s early warning system that something is wrong, but to clear them by initially rebalancing the body’s energy from within.

Acupuncture is also a holistic treatment. For example, should five different patients come to me for treatment with migraine, they would get five different treatments as they are different people with different lives. The best way that I identify these differences is through careful observation of the patient’s pulses, their tongue and other factors such as face colour, eyes and skin temperature, in addition to observing the patient’s symptoms.

A course of treatment usually lasts for a period of five to six weeks on a weekly basis. For acute conditions such as severe back pain or severe anxiety, treatment may be more regular. During treatment the patient is also encouraged to look at aspects of their lives such as diet, exercise, personal relationships that might have contributed to their physical and/or psychological pattern of disharmony. Initially, my role is to provide a benign intervention (ranging from pain relief to more energy) to help the patient address the source of their problems. As time goes on and the healing process progresses, my role becomes less pronounced and I see the patient less regularly ranging from between once a month to once every three months.

Acupuncture is a helpful supportive therapy throughout all stages of pregnancy

and, when labour is overdue, it can be very effective in inducing its onset. It can also be used, often alongside western medicine, to help with infertility or sub-fertility problems.
More information

Essentially what I aim to achieve in my practice is to reduce people’s pain, both physical and psychological, and act as a facilitator of change to improve the quality of people’s lives.
