My journey to being a CBP has been a long one, due mainly to being a Mother and Wife.  I started life as a medical secretary, moving to clinical audit and worked for the NHS for over 10 years.  I then retrained in early years education and have qualified teacher status but found the hours incompatible with my own childcare.  I thoroughly enjoyed working in the healthcare sector and therefore I decided to do an MSc in Health Psychology, branching into cognitive behavioural psychotherapy from that.

I currently work at St George’s Specialist Psychotherapy Services and have done since 2013.  The patient base is broad and complex, it includes the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety based problems, body dysmorphia and obsessive compulsive disorder.  I have also been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to do ground breaking work on dental phobia, facial pain, bruxism and burning mouth syndrome through my health psychology work.

What is CBT?

As a way of dealing with emotional problems, CBT focuses on how the thoughts, images, beliefs & attitudes that we hold (our cognitive processes) can create our feelings and mood, and how this relates to the way we behave.

CBT utilises many treatment techniques, and these are always drawn up in a collaborative way with the patient/client.  The heart of CBT is collaboration and I see myself as a facilitator, giving my patients/clients the tools to aid their recovery but also so that they are equipped to use their new knowledge in the future, if required.

Whilst its main focus is on what is going on in the present rather than the past, often the therapy will also look at how our thinking patterns may have begun in early childhood, and the impact these patterns of thinking may have on how we interpret the world as adults.
